TO DO THIS WEEKEND: BOSTON JUNE 23-25th, 2023
The Summer Solstice: A Celebration of the Sun
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and it’s a time to celebrate the sun and the start of summer.
In many cultures around the world, the summer solstice is a time of celebration. In ancient Egypt, for example, the summer solstice was a time to celebrate the god Ra, the sun god. The Egyptians believed that Ra’s journey across the sky was what caused the seasons to change. On the summer solstice, they would celebrate Ra’s victory over the forces of darkness.
In ancient Greece, the summer solstice was a time to celebrate the god Apollo, the god of the sun, music, and poetry. The Greeks believed that Apollo was born on the summer solstice, and they would celebrate his birthday with feasts, games, and sacrifices.
In ancient Scandinavia, the summer solstice was a time to celebrate Midsummer, a festival of fire and feasting. The Scandinavians believed that the summer solstice was a time when the veil between the worlds was thin, and that spirits could walk among the living. They would build bonfires to ward off evil spirits and to celebrate the arrival of summer.
In ancient China, the summer solstice was a time to celebrate the god of agriculture, Shangdi. The Chinese believed that Shangdi was responsible for the harvest, and they would pray to him for a bountiful crop. They would also celebrate the summer solstice with feasts, games, and music.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, the summer solstice is a time to appreciate the sun and the start of a new season. It is a time to connect with nature and to celebrate the power of the sun.
