Juneteenth: The History and Celebration of Freedom

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It’s celebrated on June 19, which is the anniversary of the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people in the state were free. This news came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln, but it was the first time that enslaved people in Texas learned that they were free.

Juneteenth has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s, but it was not until recently that the holiday gained widespread recognition. In 2021, President Biden signed a bill into law that officially designated Juneteenth a federal holiday.

There are many ways to celebrate Juneteenth. Some people gather for community events, such as parades, festivals, and cookouts. Others choose to spend the day with family and friends, reflecting on the meaning of freedom. There are many opportunities to learn about the history of Juneteenth and the African American experience.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Juneteenth, it’s a day to remember the importance of freedom and equality. It’s a day to celebrate the progress that has been made, and it’s a day to recommit ourselves to the work that still needs to be done.
