TO DO MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: BOSTON MAY 26-29th, 2023
Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30.
The holiday originated in the years immediately after the American Civil War. Various towns and communities held springtime tributes to the recently fallen soldiers, and it was common to decorate their graves with flowers. In 1868, General John A. Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead. He declared May 30 as Decoration Day, and it was widely observed throughout the North.
Southern states were slower to adopt Decoration Day, but by the late 19th century it had become a nationwide holiday. In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Decoration Day to the last Monday in May. This change was made to create a three-day weekend and to reduce the number of federal holidays that fell on weekdays.
Today, Memorial Day is a day for Americans to remember and honor those who have died in service to their country. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom and to renew our commitment to peace.
Veterans For Peace – Smedley Butler Brigade, Boston, will be holding their annual Memorial Day event on Monday, May 30, 2023 at 1:30 PM at Park Street Station on the Common in downtown Boston. The event will feature speeches, a march to the Soldier and Sailors Monument, and a flower-laying ceremony. All are welcome to attend and learn about the anti-war movement.
The Smedley Butler Brigade is a chapter of Veterans For Peace, a national organization of veterans who work for peace. The brigade is named after Major General Smedley Butler, a decorated Marine Corps officer who became a leading anti-war activist in the 1930s.
The brigade’s Memorial Day event is an opportunity to remember those who have died in service to their country, and to reflect on the human cost of war. The event will also provide an opportunity to learn about the brigade’s work for peace and to get involved in the anti-war movement.
For more information about the event, please visit the brigade’s website: https://www.smedleyvfp.org/
